Before Reading

Think about the following questions before and while reading.

1. Look at the front cover.

(1) Look at the title. Does ‘Fang’ sound familiar? Who is Fang and where did you hear about it?

Yes, Fang sounds familiar. Fang is Annie’s dog. I heard about it from the book Nate the Great.

(2) There are two dogs in the picture. Which one do you think is Fang?

The one on the top part of the cover or the one next to Nate?

I think the one on the top part of the cover is Fang.

Because the title is Fleeing Fang and the dog is running away.

2. Look at the back cover.

(1) How special is this book?

This is the special edition that came out to celebrate Nate the Great’s 25th anniversary.

(2) What is the problem of the story?

Annie’s dog, Fang, is missing.

(3) What will Nate do with you?

He will share his expert detective skills with us so that we can sharpen our talents.

3. Look at page 5.

(1) Who wrote the dedication? What does M. W. S. stand for?

It stands for the authors name, Majorie Weinman Sharmat.

(2) Let’s guess the answer before you check.

단서는 6글자이고, 과거형 동사이며 개가 할 수 있는 행동이고 그 동사에 목적어가 없다는 것.

8	Collapses.	Before the ice cream in front of me collapses. 아이스크림이 녹고 무너져 내리기 전에 해결해야 할 사례. 당면한 문제란 뜻이겠지요.
10	a box of tuna fish pancakes	이상한 음식이란 뜻입니다. 팬케익은 그냥 밀가루, 달걀, 우유이고 기껏해야 과일이나 견과류를 더할 뿐이니까요. 우리 식 전을 생각한다면 이상할 것도 없는데 말예요. ^^
11	You, ~ didn’t have a clue that we were coming.	위대한 탐정인 네가 우리가 오는 것에 대해 힌트 조차 몰랐군. 전혀 상상 못했군.
11	That is no surprise.	Rosamond는 괴상하게 웃는데, (Nate가 이에 익숙해서) 그렇게 웃는 게 놀랄 일도 아니다.

Ch 1 Answer Key to Comprehension

1	Who is Rosamond? Write about her. She is a girl who has four cats named Hex She laughs strangely.	10, 11
2	Why did a row of people and pets come to Nate’s house? They came to celebrate Detective Day. They would like to have a detective party for Nate because he had solved so many cases for them.	9
3	Can you guess why Annie looked sad? She was sad because she had lost her dog. I can guess it from the question of Nate, “Did you notice that Fang wasn’t there?	12
4	Think about a way you can celebrate something. Okay, imagine today is your parents’ 10th anniversary How will you celebrate it? You may draw a picture. 뭔가를 축하하는 방법을 생각해봅시다. 오늘이 부모님의 10주년 결혼기념일이라고 합시다. 어떻게 축하를 할 건가요? 그림을 그려도 좋습니다.

Ch 2 Sentences

14	This is his day off.	오늘은 Nate가 하루 쉬는 날이야.
15	I feather-dusted him.	깃털로 된 도구로 개의 먼지를 털어주었다.
16	Would you want to be a feather-dusted dog?	먼지를 털리는 개가 되고 싶냐? 개 입장이 되어 보란 뜻이겠지요.
16	Put yourself in a dog’s shoes. Paws. Whatever.	상대의 입장에서 생각해보라는 숙어인데 shoes를 신지 않는 개니까 paws로 고쳤다가, 좀 우스우니 ‘뭐가 됐든’ 하고 맺습니다.
16	I have been teaching him commands..	내가 하라는 대로 하는 연습을 여태 시키고 있었거든.
16	I’ve got a rhyming book for dogs.	개가 할 수 있는 동작을 운을 맞춰 쓴 챈트가 있답니다. 불러주면 그에 맞춰 Fang이 동작을 하는데 첫 줄을 말할 때 둘째 줄 동작을 한다네요. 그런데 lick은 그냥 개가 하는 동작이니까 꼭 commands에 따른 거 같지 않습니다. 세 번째 네 번째 줄도 바꿔서 한다니 알기는 아나? 아이들과 얘기 나눠보세요. 물론 중요한 부분은 아닙니다.
18	I solved that problem.	그래서 그 문제를 해결하고자 둘째 줄을 먼저 불렀답니다. lick lick을 먼저 말하면 문제가 없군요.
19	그림	그림을 잘 살펴보세요. 사건 해결에 별 도움 없는 얘기들이 길어지자 아이들은 모두 딴청을 피우네요. Nate만 경청을 합니다. 과연 탐정다워요.
21	Let me get this straight.	이 점을 정리해보자; 이 말을 다시 짚어 보자; 분명히 살펴보자.
21	You have a job to do.	여러분은 할 일이 있어요. Job을 이렇게도 씁니다.

Ch 2 Answer Key to Comprehension

1	What is the new case of Nate? His new case is to find Annie’s missing dog, Fang.	13
2	What is Nate’s plan to solve the case of missing Fang? He is going to teach them how to be a detective. He will teach them how to find Fang.	14
3	Write what Nate asked Annie to do. Remember if there was anything different about Fang today. Any reason why he might run away. Remember where you last saw him. Remember what he was doing. Remember who was there.	14
4	Annie, Harry and Fang came to Nate’s house. What happened on their way? All of a sudden they met with two tiny poodles barking. Fang looked surprised and ran off.	20
5	Do you think what Annie said like, feather dusting or trick practicing, is important clues to find Fang? Why or why not. (예시) I don’t think so. If he had not liked it, he could have run away earlier. But the dog disappeared on their way to Nate’s house. 아니면 I think so. He must have been very tired of being dusted and being forced to do tricks.
6	As Nate said, draw a picture of huge dog running away from two tiny poodles. Nate가 말한 대로 큰 개가 작은 개 두 마리로부터 도망가는 그림을 그리세요.
