These days, many people are texting to each other, and they don't use punctuation a lot. They use emoticons instead of punctuations. It looks more friendly and positive. For example, let's say that you are texting with your friend and your friend asks you if you can come to her birthday party. Answering 'Yes, I can.' looks like you don't want to go, but you are going because of her. However, if you answer 'Yes, I can :D' it looks more friendlier. When you are texting, you can't see each other's face, so it is hard to understand each other's feelings. Using punctuations can make the conversation too stuffy.
