#29, 30 > 선배들의 책장

오호.. 제 차례가 이렇게 돌아오는군요.. ^^;

처음 책 소개 올라오는 글부터 쭉 읽으면서 정말 주늑들어서리,, 괜히 손들었나부다,, 했었는데..

그냥 훌륭하신 분들이 있으면 저처럼 소박한 사람도 글을 올려야 누군가가 용기를 내지,, 싶어서요.

그저 제 좁은 안목에서 좋았던 책 올려볼게요. ㅎ

(지지난주부터 쑥에 들어오지 못하다가 할일 하러 이렇게 들어와 글 남기고 가니 좀 면목이 없어요. ^^:)

#29 The Way Back Home

사실 이책은 령돌맘님이 유게에 한번 이 작가의 책들을 소개해주셔서 제가 그림 보고 반해 산 책들이에요.

그림들이 너무 귀여워서요. 그냥 주문할때 이 작가의 책을 몇 권 같이 주문해버렸지요.

다행히 호민군 반응이 괜찮았었고,, 그중에 가장 즐겨보는 책이 요 'The Way Back Home'이랍니다.

탈것들을 좋아하다보니.. ㅎ

1. 작가: Oliver Jeffers

Oliver Jeffers was born in Port Hedland, Western Australia in 1977 and bred in Belfast, Northern Ireland.

As a teenager, he thoroughly enjoyed playing the spoons and travelled the land frequenting every pub he could find looking for a group of musicians to harmoniously add his percussive talents to. Unfortunately, no-one recognised his musical talent, so to force some other way of fitting in, Oliver painted them instead. It was when he came runner-up in The Irish News amateur art competition in 1995 that he seriously considered painting as a direction in which to take his life. It was a good decision, as since then Oliver has travelled the globe extensively, exhibiting his work in New York, Sydney, Melbourne, London, Belfast and Glengormley.

He made his name as a young contemporary artist with several small exhibitions in Belfast between 1995 and 1998. At this time, Oliver also began illustrating book jackets for local publishing houses.

Whilst taking a break from university during 1999-2000, Oliver travelled across America and Australia, settling in Sydney for a period to work in freelance illustration and painting. In Australia, he illustrated for various magazines and got his first big break when Lavazza Coffee Company saw his offbeat coffee illustrations. They subsequently commissioned him to paint some pictures for their HQ and to illustrate their Christmas cards. They also featured him in a live exhibition during the Aroma coffee festival at The Rocks, Sydney, where he illustrated on site in front of thousands of people, using coffee rings and black ink.

Oliver returned from his travels in 2000 to finish his degree at the University of Ulster. He graduated with a First Class Honours Degree in Illustration and Visual Communication. During his final year, he had a prominent exhibition of portraiture in the John Hewitt Bar, Belfast. The exhibition was entitled 'Boys At The Bar', and depicted the afternoon (and morning!) drinking culture of Belfast. It attracted a great deal of media attention and all 16 p***es sold on the opening night.

Oliver's eye-catching style of artwork has taken him in many directions, including poster illustration, painting 10 commissioned artworks for a London bar and designing album covers. He paints in an impressive range of styles and sizes with a wide variety of media, and is currently experimenting by pushing the creative boundaries of picture books.

Oliver began writing and illustrating children's stories when he realised that people didn't believe what he did with his time. He has had a number of adventures that he has collected into his books for children; his debut picture book, 'How to Catch a Star', was inspired by a moment sitting on the end of a jetty in Sydney, looking at the stars. Not having an agent, Oliver sent his work unsolicited to HarperCollins Publishers. Its potential was immediately recognised, it was whisked off the slush pile and the publishing process began. In 2004, the book was published by HarperCollins Children's Books and was also short listed for the Booktrust Early Years Award for Best New Illustrator. In 2005, 'How to Catch a Star' won a Merit Award at the CBI/Bisto Book of Year Awards.

After the international success of 'How to Catch a Star', Oliver went on to produce the breathtakingly beautiful follow-up, 'Lost and Found', which garnered fantastic sales and critical acclaim on publication and went on to win the Gold Award at Nestle Children's Book Prize in 2005.

He continues to exhibit his art in major cities of the world and was recently commissioned to produce illustrations for Starbucks' nation-wide in-store displays in the UK

Oliver loves plastic food, suitcase handles and Elvis, and has developed a bizarre habit of endlessly writing lists he never reads. He remains hell bent on travelling all over the world.

이 작가의 책에 공히 등장하는 '한 소년'...

어느날 구석에 치워두었던 비행기를 발견, 서둘로 비행채비를 하게 되지요.

자, 이제 땅을 박차고 높이 높이~ 우주까정 날아가요..^^

아콩..? 근데 이게 왠일?

오랫동안 방치되어 있던지라 연료가 없는것을 확인하지 않았네요.

결국 소년은 달에 불시착을 하게 되지요..

혼자 외로이..

근데 결국 가지고 있던 램프도 불이 꺼지게 되는군요. 참 막막했겄지요?

허헛.. ^^

근데 이 소년처럼 갑작스런 우주선 고장으로 달에 착륙하게된 이가 또 있었으니..

그의 이름은 Martian..

둘은 서로에게 각자의 상황을 설명하고..

같이 이 난관을 어찌 극복해갈지 의견을 나눕니다.

해결책으로 생각해낸 것이 바로,

소년의 집으로 가서 필요한 물건들을 가지고 와서 고치고,, 또 연료를 채우는 것이었지요.

지구로 돌아온 소년.. 마침 좋아하는 프로그램이 TV에서 방영되고 있었터라..

본연의 임무를 잊고 편안한 의자에 앉아 TV에 심취해주시는군요.

아,..Martian은 소년을 계속 기다리고 있는데 말이지요..

헛!!

갑작스럽게 할일이 떠오른 소년. (놀래는 모습이 참 귀엽고 리얼하지요?)

Martian을 불러보지만 대답이 없지요.

소년은 급히 높은 곳으로 올라갑니다.

다행히 Martian이 줄을 내려 당겨주는군요.

챙겨온 것들로 연료도 채우고, 우주선도 고쳤으니,,

이제는 헤어져야 할 때.. (쭈뼛거리는 모습이 너무 깜찍해요.. ^^)

그들은 각자 반대의 방향으로 Way back home을 택하게 되지요.

이건 이야기 끝장에 덧붙여진 페이지인데요.

집에 돌아온 소년에게 무전기가 소포로 오는데.. 'Hello! Hello!'라는 소리가 무전기에서 들리네요.

혹시 저거이 Marthian이 보낸건 아닐런지.. ㅋ

그림이나 스토리전개의 상상력이 참 대단하다는 생각을 하게 되는 작가의 책이라서요.

첫번째 책으로 추천해봤어요.. ^^*

# 30. The Runaway Bunny

이 작가의 책 중에 먼저 접한 것은 'Goodnight moon'이었지요. 다정다감한 책.. ^^

Goodnight moon 뒤에 같은 작가의 책으로 소개되어있던 책인데 호민군이 좋아해줬어요.

사실 한글책으로 먼저 접하게 되어서 한글책을 더 좋아하긴해요.

읽어줄때 너무 좋아요.. ^^ 그림도 선명하면서도 따스한 느낌이어서 눈이 즐겁구요..ㅋ

그의 대표작 『모두 잠이 들어요』는 1944년 미국에서 그 해 가장 아름다운 그림책 작가에게 주는 칼데콧 상을 받았다. 또한 그녀의 작품은 많은 일러스트레이터들의 영감을 불러일으켜, 클레먼트 허드가 구성한『잘 자요 달님』,『달려라 토끼』, 장 샬럿이 구성한 『잘 자』『꼬마 기차 둘』, 그 밖의『작은 섬』『작은 깃털 가족』『도망가는 토끼』『나의 세계』, 『졸려요 졸려요 아기 사자』 등을 비롯한 작품들은 어린이 문학의 고전으로 손꼽히며, 지금까지도 여전히 어린이들에게 사랑을 받고 있다.

2. 그림: Clement G. Hurd

(어머, 남자분이네요..OO!)

Clement G. Hurd (January 12, 1908-February 5, 1988) was an American illustrator of children's books. He is best known for his collaborations with author Margaret Wise Brown, including Goodnight Moon (1947) and The Runaway Bunny (1942). He also illustrated a number of books written by his wife Edith (a friend of Brown's) as well as a children's book written by Gertrude Stein, The World Is Round. He also wrote and illustrated the book "Run,Run,Run"

The son of a New York mortgage banker Richard Melancthon Hurd, Hurd was educated at St. Paul's School in Concord, New Hampshire, studied architecture at Yale University and painting with Fernand Léger in Paris. On seeing two of his paintings, Brown asked him if he would consider illustrating children's books.

His son Thacher Hurd is also a children's book author and illustrator, and referred in an interview to the "wonderful aura of creativity" surrounding his father and the Vermont farm that was their home.

A doctored/altered photo of Hurd was included in the 60th anniversary republication of Goodnight Moon with a cigarette removed from his hand, causing controversy over publication standards.[1]
