It's dark underground. You can't see anything. But there's a whole world of living things to discover. 땅 속에는 아주 어둡고 아무것도 보이지 않는답니다. 하지만 그곳에 놀라운 세상이 있어요.
In this book, you'll be able to look at animals that live underground, just as if you were down there with them. 여러분은 이 책을 통해서 직접 땅 속 동물과 함께 있는 것처럼 땅 속에 사는 동물들을 찾아볼 수 있을 거에요.

When you go for a walk in the countryside, you can see birds and butterflies, cows and horses. You might think that all animals live in the open air, like they do. 시골길을 산책하다보면 새, 나비, 소 그리고 말들을 볼수가 있지요. 이 모든 동물들도 여러분처럼 야외에서 살고 있다고 생각할 거에요.
But in fact, there are lots of other animals hiding in the darkness underground. Let’s use your magic torch to look at them. 하지만 사실은 어두운 땅속에 다른 동물들이 많이 살고 있어요. 매직토치를 이용해서 그것들을 찾아보세요.
The rabbit 토끼
You’ve probably seen rabbits frisking about in the countryside. But did you know their homes are underground? They live in burrows, safe from animals such as faxes, who like to eat them.
여러분은 아마도 시골에서 깡충깡충 뛰는 토끼를 보았을 거에요. 하지만 그들의 집이 땅 속에 있다는 걸 알고 있나요? 토끼는 굴 속에 살아요. 여기는 자신들을 잡아먹는 여우같은 동물로부터 안전하지요.
The mole 두더지
It’s not often that a mole sticks its nose above ground. Most of the time, you only see the mounds of earth they leave behind as they dig. Moles carve out a maze of underground tunnels using their front paws as spades. They eat earthworms and insect larvae.
두더지가 땅 위에서 코를 들이대고 눌러 앉아있는 것을 보는 건 흔하지 않지요. 대개 여러분은 두더지를 땅을 파다 뒤로 쌓인 흙 더미(둔덕)에서 볼 수 있지요. 두더지는 앞발을 삽처럼 사용하면서 땅 속에 터널을 만들어요. 두더지는 지렁이나 애벌래를 먹고 살아요.
The earthworm 지렁이
If you’ve seen an earthworm, you’ll know it moves along by contracting and extending its body. It swallows soil as it goes, feeding on what it can, and casting out the rest in neat little coils.
지렁이를 본 적이 있다면 지렁이는 몸음 늘였다가 움츠렸다 하면서 움직인다는 것을 알 거에요. 지렁이는 앞으로 나가면서 흙을 먹고 그속에서 영양분을 흡수하고 나머지는 코일모양으로 생긴 미끈한 똥으로 배출하지요 .
The beaver 비버
Beavers build their homes right out in the middle of the water, using branches. They have to dive underwater to get inside, but the lodge where the family lives is cosy and dry, well above the water level.
비버는 물 한가운데에 나뭇가지를 가지고 집을 만들어요. 집으로 들어가기 위해선 물 속으로 잠수를 해야해요. 하지만 그들이 사는 곳은 수면보다 높은 곳으로 아주 조용하고, 물기가 없지요.
The cockchafer 왕풍뎅이
This insect spends the longest part of its life underground. The female lays her eggs in the ground and the adults crawl out of the ground four years later. But in a few months, their life in the open air is over.
이 벌레는 자신의 생애 가장 긴 시간을 땅 속에서 보내지요. 암컷이 땅 속에 알을 낳으면 4년이 지난 뒤 성충이 되어 땅 밖으로 기어나와요. 하지만 몇 개월 안에 바깥 세상에서의 삶을 마친답니다.
The kingfisher 물총새
This unusual bird spends its life in the air, under the ground and in the water! It nests in a hole in the side of the river bank. From its high perch, the kingfisher spots a fish in the water below and dives down to catch it.
흔치않은 이 새는 대부분의 시간을 공기중과 땅 속, 그리고 물 속에서 보내요. 강기슭의 한 쪽 구멍 속에 둥지를 틀지요. 물총새는 높은 횃대에서 물 속의 물고기를 발견하고는 물고기를 잡기 위해 물 속으로 뛰어든답니다.
Lots of other animals spend time in the dark. There may be thousands of ants hurrying about in a well-organised nest just beneath your feet! 많은 다른 동물들이 어둠 속에서 생활해요. 여러분 발 밑에 수천개의 개미들이 잘 짜여진 둥지 안에서 분주하게 움직이고 있을 거에요.
The spotted woodpecker hollows out its nest in the trunk of a tree. 점박이 딱다구리는 나무기둥(줄기)을 도려내서 둥지를 만들어요.
A bear hibernates all winter, snug and warm in its den, waiting for spring to come. 곰은 겨울내내 아늑하고 따뜻한 동굴 속에서 겨울잠을 자요. 다시 올 봄을 기다리면서 말이죠.
The badger and the fox make their lairs underground. 오소리나 여우는 자신의 집(굴)을 땅 속에 만들어요.
The tiny field mouse digs out long tunnels. 작은 들쥐도 긴 터널을 찾아내지요.
