[A First Discovery Book] Fish Underwater

영국책의 제목은 Fish Underwater이고, 미국판은 Under the Sea라고 된 책을 나름대로 정리해보았어요. 이 책 전체를 차지하고 있는 그림은 물고기들이라 영국판의 제목이 내용과 더 어울리다 싶군요. 바다 속엔 물고기만 있는 건 아니니까요.

책을 펼쳐보면 수많은 바다동물의 그림들이 있는데 각양각색의 모습들이 무척 신기하더군요. 게다가 매직토치로 물고기들을 찾아보는 기쁨도 작지 않구요. 정말 멋진 책인 거 같더군요.

대신 수많은 종의 이름들은 일반 사전에 나오지 않는 것들도 많아서 번역에 어려움이 있었지만 참고문헌으로 쓴 사전을 통해 가능하면 사전에 있는 이름을 붙이기 위해 노력했답니다.

바다는 앞으로 우리 인류가 살아가기 위해 개척할 새로운 장소이기 때문에 앞으로 커서 활약할 우리 아이들에게 더욱 친숙하게 다가갈 필요가 있다는 생각도 드는 군요.

[내용설명]

우선 fish라는 것 어류란 뭘까 생각해 볼까요? 브리태니카 사전에 의하면 "여러 진화 계통의 다양한 냉혈 수중 척추동물들"이라고 하는데...말이 좀 어렵죠? 하지만 "냉혈", "척추동물"이란 단어에 집중해보면 대충 감이 잡히실 거에요. 냉혈동물을 달리 변온동물이라고도 하는데 주변환경에 체온이 변하는 동물들을 가리켜요. 그리고 생선의 뼈를 연상해보면 물고기도 척추동물이란 걸 쉽게 이해하실 수 있을 거에요.

과학을 접할 땐 말의 정의를 짚고 넘어가는 것이 중요하답니다. 그래서 말이 길어졌는데 바로 책을 볼까요?

처음에 By the seashore... 부분에 많은 바다 동물들을 소개하고 있는데 "Fish;어류"의 정의 생각해보면서 한번 보세요. 해파리, 말미잘, 해면동물. 새우, 홍합...등등이 fish로 보이나요? 그렇지 않죠? 그래서 책에서도 fish란 말 대신 creatures란 말을 쓰고 있어요. fish란 말은 다음장부터 소개되고 있지요.

잠깐 중학교 시절 공부 복습해볼까요? 해파리, 말미잘은 강장동물, 성게, 불가사리는 극피동물 , 집게, 게는 절지동물중 갑각류, 새우도 절지동물, 홍합은 연체동물중 조개류, 그리고 해면동물! 이런 건 참고로 알아두시구요, 자세한 것은 아이랑 백과사전을 찾아보는 것이 좋을 거 같아요. 첫발견 책을 볼 때는 그야말로 첫발견이니까 모습을 관찰해서 관찰한 것을 표현하는 것 위주로 책을 보면 좋겠어요. 첫발견의 책 내용도 자세히 보면 내용설명은 별로 없으니까요.

이 책은 바닷가의 얕은 바다에서 육지에서 먼, 깊은 바다의 순으로 이야기 하고 있어요. 비닐 페이지(필름지)에 있는 그림도 비교해보면 첫 화면에선 바다 표면에서 바닥이 한눈에 보이고, 바다 속도 환하지만 뒤로 갈수록 바다 깊이를 눈으로 확인 못하고, 깊은 바다 속엔 빛이 들어오지 않아서 점점 어둡게 표현되고 있답니다. 단 참고로 비닐 페이지(필름지)로 된 곳의 그림을 볼 땐 매직토치를 이용해서 보지만 전체적인 이야기를 나눌 땐 뒷면에 흰 종이를 대고 보면 좋겠어요. 그럼 그림 전체를 환하게 볼 수 있거든요.

깊은 바다에는 크기도 큰 물고기들이 살고, 바다 바닥 쪽엔 크기가 작은 물고기들이 살아가고 있지요. 그리고 살아가는 모양도 생긴 모양만큼이나 다르구요. 이곳에 소개된 모든 물고기들의 삶을 모두 들여다 볼 수 없어 아쉽기는 하지만 그래도 많은 호기심을 가질 거 같더군요. 호기심들은 차츰 해결해나가기로 해요.

[활용예문] 토치라이트로 그림을 하나하나 찾을 수 있어 단어 익히기에 좋을 듯 싶더군요.

At first, let's go to the seashore. 우선 바닷가로 가보자.

You can see these things by the seashore. 바닷가에선 이런 것들을 볼 수 있단다.

And their names are different. 그리고 이름도 다 다르지.

This is jellyfish. It has a clear soft body. Like jelly! 이것은 해파리란다. 투명하고 부드러운 몸을 가졌어. 마치 젤리처럼 말이야.

Then, find the jellyfish on the black page using your magic light. 그럼 매직토치를 이용해서 검은 페이지에서 해파리를 찾아보렴.

At the bottom of the sea it is very dark, and you can not see anything, but there is an amazing world to discover there.
바다의 바닥에는 아주 어둡고 아무것도 보이지 않는답니다. 하지만 그곳에 놀라운 세상이 있어요.

To go down deeper, you will need to learn scuba diving. 더 깊이 들어가려면 스쿠버 다이빙을 배워야 합니다.
You can also go deeper still with a diving suit, and have an air-pipe, which connects you to air in the surface. 잠수복과 표면공기와 당신을 연결해주는 공기관이 있다면 아주 더 깊은 곳도 갈 수 있어요.

There are also observation submarines to go right down on to the ocean bed. 또한 바다 바닥을 곧바로 내려가는 관측하는 잠수함도 있어요.

With a simple paper flashlight, the world of the oceans will be revealed as you explore the pages of this book.

Remove the paper flashlight from the back of the book. Move the flashlight between the black pages and the plastic pages to discover hidden images.

When you look out at the ocean you might see a boat, some waves, and perhaps a fish or two.

But when you dive beneath the waves, you will discover a world full of incredible landscapes and colorful fish. In order to find the secrets beneath the sea, take your flashlight so that you can see more clearly.
