이번 주 주제는 cancer -sniffing dogs (Dogs being used in cancer detection) 입니다.
The UK’s National Health Service is currently assessing whether dogs can be used to detect early stage prostate cancer.
최근 연구에 따르면 훈련된 개들은 인간의 소변 냄새로 전립선암을 발견하는 비율이 98% 까지 도달했다고 합니다.
연구자들에 따르면 소변의 특정 휘발성 유기 화합물에 나는 냄새를 개들이 맡아서 전립선암을 찾을 수 있다고 합니다.
그러나 이것은 모든 개들에게 다 가능한 것은 아니고 개를 꾸준히 훈련시켜야 가능하다고 합니다.

개의 후각
개는 사람에게 특별한 동물이죠. 사람들도 다른 동물에 비해 개를 특별하게 여깁니다.
애완동물로 함께 사람과 많이 살고 있고 그런경우는 거의 가족의 일원이 되지요.
개의 모습을 보면

개가 암을 발견할 수 있는 특별한 능력을 가질 수 있는 것은 개의 뛰어난 후각때문입니다.

개는 숨을 들이쉴 때 코 앞쪽인 콧구멍으로 공기와 함께 냄새 분자가 함께 들어오고 이때 냄새를 지각합니다. 개처럼 다리가 넷인 동물은 머리가 땅에 가깝고 따라서 시각보다는 후각이 외부정보를 받아들이는 주 감각이다. 따라서 머리의 해부학적 구조도 냄새를 잘 맡을 수 있게 최적화되어 있습니다.
반면 사람은 반면 두 다리로 서기 떄문에 시야가 넓어지면서 시각에 더 많이 의존하게 되었고 외부정보로서 중요성은 떨어지게 되면서 얼굴 형태도 주둥이가 없어지고 눈이 앞으로 나오게 되었다는 진화론적인 설명도 있습니다.
여기서 잠깐~ 스크립트에 소개된 단위를 살펴볼까요?
ppm이라는 단위는 많이 들어봤지요?
보통 ppm은 수질 오염도나 대기 오염도를 표시할 때 쓰이는 단위입니다.
예를 들어 물 1Kg은 1000g 이다. 1g은 1000mg이죠. 따라서 물 1Kg은 1000,000mg이다.
즉 물에 어떤 오염 물질이 1mg 포함되어 있다면 이것을 1ppm이라고 합니다.
이보다 더 극미량을 나타낼 때 ppb, ppt를 사용하게 됩니다.
ppb(parts per billion)는 오염물질 농도가 10억분의 몇인가를 나타냅니다.
물 1L에 몇 ㎍(마이크로그램, 1000분의 1 ㎎)이 들어 있느냐를 나타내는 단위이죠.
또 아주 미세한 농도를 따질 때에는 ppt (parts per trillion)을 사용하기도 합니다.
농도가 1조 분의 몇인가를 나타낼 때 사용되며 물 1L에 몇 ng(나노그램, 1000분의 1㎍)이 들어있느냐를 나타내는 단위입니다.
