admitted that 이하에서 삽입된  in fact 빼버리고 나면 it was they who(=that)  had created~ 강조구문 보이시나요?

they had created these crop circles의 문장에서 주어 they를 강조해서 쓴 강조구문이예요.

who이하에 동사가 나와 있으므로 당연히 주격인 they가 와야 겠지요. 

  them이 오려면 who가 아니라 whom이 나와야 하고 그 이하에 동사만 오면 안되고  주어 동사가 와야 해요.  말로 풀어 쓰려니 괜히 복잡한거 같은데요.  강조구문이라는 것만 아시면 이해 되실거라  생각해요.

강조구문) Tom met her yesterday.에서

Tom(주어) 을 강조하는 경우: It was Tom that(=who) met her yesterday.

주어를 강조한 경우  that 이하에 met동사만 나와 있구요.

herI(목적어)를 강조하는 경우: It was her that(=whom) Tom met yesterday.

목적어를 강조한 경우 that이하에 Tom met 주어+동사가 나와야 하구요.
