Horrible Science #3. Bulging Brain Name: Eugene
1. How did the ancient people thought about the brain?
They thought that the brain was connected with the heart. They thought the
heart was the thinking center and the brain make the heart beat.(Ha Ha very *****)
2. Why is the cortex (the outer part of the brain) wrinkly? (see p.31)
It¡¯s to make the brain smaller to get in the head. It¡¯s the same theory like crushing a paper and it gets smaller. If your brain was flat, it would be a size of a pillowcase. Your head will need
to be very big.
3. What machines are used for brain surgery? Summarize each of its functions. (see p.38)
CAT: CT means computerized tomography. The machine sends weak X-rays through
the brain and shows up the result on a computer screen.
PET: It¡¯s a positive emission tomography machine. The patient has to be injected with a
radioactive chemical. The scanner detects the chemical so you can see what¡¯s going on
and the region in the body.
MRI: Magnetic Resonance imaging. It surrounds the brain with magnatic force and zaps the brain with radio waves. The machine detects radio waves bouncing back from hydrogen atoms in the brain. The scanner turns the signals into a cool picture of slices of brain and even shows where blood is flowing.
EEG: This stands for electroencephalograph machine. The ****l electrodes pick up electrical signals given off as the brain thinks and the machine displays them as a print-out showing the signals as peaks.
4. What is difference between girls¡¯ and boys¡¯ ability? (see p.96~97)
Boys are often quicker at solving tricky math problems in their heads.
But girls usually use both sides of brain and waste time putting their thoughts into words.
5. What is dopamine and serotonin? What do they do? (see p.116~117)
Dopamine shakes up limbic system and make feel emotion. And serotonin squirted by neurons

HORRIBLE SCIENCE #3
Bulging Brains
1. How did the ancient people thougt about the brain?
- The ancient Egyptians and Greeks thought that the thinking park of the body was the heart. This seemed right because your heart beats fater when you're upset or excited. Brainy Greek philosopher Aristotle(384- 322 BC) also thought the heart did the thinking. The reckoned the brain was simply a cooling system for the blood. According to Aristotle when you get a cold your cooling system overflows.(That's why snot dribbles out of your nose.)But that was too wrong.
2. Why is the cortex (the outer part of the brain) wrinkly?
- The Wrinles and bumps on the paper make it take up less space. The Wrinkles on your cortex allow a larger area to squash between your ears. And that's very important because the cortex is very thin- no more than 3mm thick. If your brain was flat it would be the size of a pillowcase and you'd need a huge head to fit it all in.
3. What machines are used for brain surgery? Summarize each of its funtions.
- Machine 1 : CAT
- Machine 2 : a PET
- Machine 3 : a MRI means Magnetic Resonance Imaging
- Machine 4 : an EEG
4. What is difference between girl's and boy's ability?
- Girls: better at controiling thier finger movement for delicated fiddly tasks.
Good at remembering lardmorks.
-Boys: Quicker at solving tricky math problems
Good at sencing direction
Good at imagining what a 3D puzzle would look like when it's done.
5. What is dopamine and seretomin? What do they do?
- Dopamine shakesup your limbic system and you feel emotion. And seretomin squirted by neurons.

Horrible Science #3. Bulging Brain
1. How did the ancient people thought about the brain?
Many ancient people thought the brain was just simply a cooling system for our blood and the heart do the thinking because the heart beats fast when people gets mad or angry.
2. Why is the cortex (the outer part of the brain) wrinkly? (see p.31)
To take up less space. The wrinkles on the cortex makes more area to squash.
3. What machines are used for brain surgery? Summarize each of its functions. (see p.38)
Such as electroencephalograph or the CAT or PET CP or MRI P are used at brain surgery.
4. What is difference between girls¡¯ and boys¡¯ ability? (see p.96~97)
Boys are good at math or science and have a good sense of direction.
And girls are good at controlling fingers and remembering landmarks.
5. What is dopamine and serotonin? What do they do? (see p.116~117)
Dopamine: Shakes of limbic system and make feel emotion.
Serotonin: Squirted by neurons.

Horrible Science #3. Bulging Brainxml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />
1. How did the ancient people thought about the brain?
Ancient Eygptions & Greeks : They thought the part of thinking was the burgling heart.
Not the brain. They think brain was nothing. I also agreed with the thinking part is the heart.
Like when you have passion you need a good heart. Like that maybe at that period, they can think it¡¯ll be true with thinking with hearts. But now, that theory is over.
Aristotle ( The Greek man) : He reckoned the brain was a simple cooling system for the blood.
And he said when we got a cold, our cooling system overflows. (Magnificent thinking.)
2. Why is the cortex (the outer part of the brain) wrinkly? (see p.31)
Because the wrinkle allow a larger area to squish between ear and ear. It¡¯s important that the cortex is really thin but it¡¯s size is very big.(Like pig is big but pig¡¯s internal organs are small)
3. What machines are used for brain surgery? Summarize each of its functions. (see p.38)
CAT : It¡¯s nothing with the cat. This is a machine. Ct means computerized tomography. The machine sends weak X-rays through the brain and show up the result on a computer screen.
PET : Don¡¯t understand with your dog, Mongsil. It¡¯s a Positive Emission Tomography.
The scanner detects what happens when the blood take the chemical in to their brain. The blood flows to the bits of the brain that are most active.
MRI : a MRI means Magnetic Resonance Imaging It surrounds the brain with magnetic force and zaps the brain with the radio waves. The machine detects radio waves bouncing back from hydrogen atoms in the brain.
4. What is difference between girls¡¯ and boys¡¯ ability? (see p.96~97)
The boys are often quicker at solving tricky math problems.
But girls ten to use both side and waste time putting their thoughts into words.
They boys are better at imaging when girls ten to waste time explain themselves in words how they will solve the puzzle.
But the girls brains are better at controlling their finger movements for delicate fiddly tasks.
Boy have a good sense of direction but they¡¯re not so good at remembering landmarks.
In conclusion boys and girls have differing abilities in some areas and use their brains in different ways.
5. What is dopamine and serotonin? What do they do? (see p.116~117)
Both of them are brain chemical.
Dompamine : shake up limbic system and make feel emotion. It seems to make neurons more active and fire more signals.
Serotonin : It¡¯s squirted by neurons linking the limbic system and the cortex. It tends to calm the neurons down and makes feel more sensible
