26 Fairmount Avenue Name Edward
1. Why did Tomie move to a house in 26 Fairmount Avenue?
There was an enormous hurricane where Tomie lived. After the hurricane disappeared Tomie¡¯s house was a mess. Trees were lying every where. The year 1938 was the special year to Tomie. It was the year that the huge hurricane destroyed Tomie¡¯s home and it was also a year that Tomie¡¯s family started to build 26 Fairmount Avenue.
2. How does the main character Tomie call 3 nanas and why?
Because his Irish great-grandmother Nana spent all of her time upstairs. So he called great-grandmother nana down stairs. She was not liking her life almost living upstairs. She was either in the kitchen or sitting in her chair in the parlor. She used to see the neighbors through the window.
3. How does Tomie feel about moving to a new house?
He was very excited about moving to a new house. After the foundation and the cellar were finished, the builders came to start on the house itself. They covered the opening over the cellar with wood which was the floor. But it wasn¡¯t Tomie¡¯s and Tomie¡¯s glad about it because it was knocked down by the wind.
4. The author describes the story of watching Snow White and Seven Dwarfs very precisely. How did you feel when you first watched the movie or the book? What was interesting?
I didn¡¯t watch the movie of Snow White because I¡¯m a boy and weren¡¯t interested in such fairy tales. But I know it and read the book once. First, I was interested that after Snow white marry with the prince, she didn¡¯t forget the Seven Dwarfs and she thanked them for living with her and saved her. And I thank she was a little bit stupid too. One old lady, who is so ugly it even looks like a witch, giving her an apple for free is so strange. That Snow white didn¡¯t recognized the strange feeling means she is so kind and generous that she have so slow sense and be inflexible.
5. Why was the house not built during the winter? Who helped them to finish the construction?
Tomie¡¯s father had fired the builder because the builder didn¡¯t listened to their parents and he did everything the way he want to. So, the builder was out of favor.
6. What is "the backyard project"? Who helped, and how did they do it?
The ¡®backyard project¡¯ was a project cleaning the backyard. The first thing they have to do was to burn off all the stuff growing in the backyard. Bunch of People stood around the yard with buckets of water, and old brooms. And Tomie¡¯s mom stood holding a hose attached to the water faucet. It was successful. Then his dad hired an old Italian man who had a horse and a plow. After the yard was plowed, he made the ground smooth and flat.
7. How would you feel if you finally move into the house that you waited for?
Well, I would feel great. Moving a place where I used to use it often is always a great thing and a jolly thing to do. An old house is a place where you used to live since you were little and you can become fond of the house. But living in the new house is exciting and you can¡¯t know what new lives are waiting you. Like me, I used to live in an old apartment when I used to live since 3 years. And I asked my parents to move to a brand new apartment which is near to the old one. Both the apartments were near to the school. When I came home after the kindergarten, I saw my new house waiting for me. I can¡¯t forget that day. So, I think moving to a new place is always an exciting thing.
