도대체 이런 청혼이 어디있단 말입니까~~~~

2. fellow-missionary로는 가겠다고 합니다.
이만해도 정말 큰 결정 아닌가요? St. John의 요구가 좀 지나치네요..

3. Rochester의 행방을 알기위해 얘기를 나눈 여관 주인이
공교롭게도Thornfield Hall의  옛 집사였네요.

Jane은 이 남자로 부터 Thornfield Hall이 추수시기에
정신병자인 Rochester wife의 방화로 소실되었다는 사실을 알게 됩니다.
화재가 발생하자 하인들과 정신병자 부인을 구하러 들어갔던 Rochester는
팔하나와 시력을 잃게 되고, 그 wife는 지붕에서 떨어져 죽었다는 사실도 듣게 되지요.
그리고 지금은 30마일떨어진 외진  농장의 저택에서  John 부부와 함께
세상을 등지고 살고 있다는 사실을 알게 됩니다.

4. 촛불과 함께 물한잔이 놓인 쟁반을 들과 갑니다.
Rochester는 눈은 보이지 않지만 촛불을 키고, 저녁식사 대신에 물을 마시고 있었네요.

5. 저는 미국에서 결혼식을 올리는 바람에 저희쪽은 가족, 친지, 친한 친구 한명이 참석해서
크진 않지만 조촐하고 예쁜 결혼식을 올렸어요.
야외 결혼식이 있는데 시간이 절묘하게 맞아서 결혼식 마지막에 근처에서 터진 불꽃놀이도 구경하구요.

그런데 저는 직장 포기하고 가족을 떠나 홀홀단신 새로운 세상에 서있다는 생각에
마냥 즐겁고 설레진 않았던 것 같아요.
참으로 결정하는게 더딘 저인데 지금 생각해도 정말 단호한 결정으로 결혼을 했어요.

6. 둘 중에 한명을 고르라면 저 또한 로체스터요.
저는 St. John을 보면서 이리 이기적인 인간이 다 있나 싶었어요.
상대를 너무나 사랑하기에 자신의 과거를 숨긴 남자와, 자신의 야망을 위해 상대방의 헌신만을 강요하는 남자.
누구를 선택해야하는지는 명확한 것 같아요.

2. She will, as his assistant.

3. He was the late Mr Rochester's butler. He means the present gentleman Mr Edward's father.

Mrs Poole was fast asleep after the gin and water, the mad lady would take the keys out of her pocket, go roaming about the house. He sent Mrs Fairfax away to her friends at a distance. Miss Adele was put to school. When all was burning above and below and got the servants out of the beds and helped them down himself and went back to get his mad wife out of her cell. But she was on the roof. Mr Rochester ascend through the sky-light on to the roof. She yelled and gave a spring and the next minute she lay smashed on the pavement. Afterwards the house was burnt to the ground: there are only some bits of walls standing now. He was taken out from under the ruins, alive but sadly hurt. He is now helpless indeed-blind, and a cripple. He lives at Ferndean with old John and his wife.

5. 화려하지도 그렇다고 조용하지도 않았던 결혼식... 늦은 나이에 하는 결혼식이라 해야하나 말아야하나 그당시엔 꽤 고민했던 기억이 나네요... 신랑(과 동기이니 벌써 20년이 넘었네요...^^)하고 만나면서 그냥 솔로를 꿈꿨다고 해야할까요...ㅋ 지금까지 별 싸움없이 친구(?)처럼 지내고 있답니다...ㅎ

6. Rochester가 나쁜남자(심리전)라 생각했는데... St John은 더 나쁜사람이네요... 사랑하지도 않으면서 종교를 위해 여자를 희생하다니요...

Rochester... Jane의 탁월한 선택인거 같아요.^^

기나긴 여정이 끝났네요...

몇 달 지나 다시 한 번 읽어야겠습니다.

150년이 지나도 사랑받는데엔 이유가 있는듯 합니다.
